Plot Summary
Death Of A Red Heroine is the first novel in the Inspector Chen Cao series by author Qui Xialong.  The body of a young woman is found murdered and Inspector Chen Cao of the Shanghai Police Bureau is called in to investigate.  When the body is identified as an important National Model Worker the case takes a political turn, especially when the prime suspect is an important Communist Party member.

My Review
This book was unfortunately rather flat at times and probably overly long for what it was.  The case takes a seemingly long time to be resolved and not much happens for a long period.  As a result the author spends a lot of time discussing other things rather than the case itself.

Inspector Chen Cao seems to have lot going on.  Alongside being a police inspector he also writes poetry and translates western mysteries to supplement his income raising the suspicions of his political superiors.  The book does quite often take a journey into the world of Chinese literature and poetry which, while interesting, often detracts from the main focus.

Where this book does do quite well, and probably its main purpose, is to investigate the modern (nineties) political and socio-cultural views of China.  Inspector Chen Cao constantly runs into political interference from his superiors, often being sidelined into other projects while working on the politically charged case.  It looks into the corruption of the regime, something endemic in modern China and the tensions between some of the reactive and progressive forces inside the regime.
