Plot Summary

By Its Cover is the 23rd novel in the Commissario Brunetti series by author Donna Leon.  Brunetti receives a call from the owner of a Venetian library that someone has been stealing books from valuable and important texts.  A suspect is quickly identified as the American professor who requested to view the manuscripts but as Brunetti investigates he finds the American professor was using fake information and when a long term member of the library turns up dead the suspects quickly multiply.

My Review
This is something of a more laid back crime novel than other Italian and American (the author is American) novels.  It was a fairly pedestrian read that didn't really have that much pace to it.

Of course this pace was reflected in the character of Brunetti who was enjoyable if somewhat underdeveloped in this novel.  He is a patient man who plods along but knows all the right questions to ask whilst dealing with the high society in which the novel takes place.  He himself is a more intellectual character than say a Montalbano.

The book is also has a more intellectual and literary style to the reading which also reflects the society and culture in which it is set.  I was slightly disappointed by the ending though feeling it cut rather short and was expecting more to it, even if the overall plot was quite good and certainly not your usual crime fiction fare.
