Ratking is the first novel in the Aurelio Zen series by author Michael Dibdin.  Zen is called in to help return the Miletti family who has been kidnapped.  The political masters want someone to take the fall in case things go wrong. not wanting to really help out.  And that's exactly what happens.  After a ransom drop is paid Miletti turns up dead so Zen decides to investigate.

For not being Italian Dibdin describes the Italian style of police work and investigation very well.  Anybody who has read Montalbano or Soneri will understand what Italian police detecting is like.  Slow, based on favors and political patronage.  Dibdin's book, however, comes with a much sharper edge attached to it.  It seems more well rounded novel than some of the translated books.

It will probably seem alien to many how Italy's justice system works and how mixed in its culture it is.  Michael Dibdin takes the reader into the heart of this system and writes about it quite humorously at times.  Zen must navigate the politics of dealing with a powerful family and their friends in high places.
