Plot Summary
Arsene Lupin- The Gentleman Burglar is the first novel in the Arsene Lupin series by Maurice LeBlanc.  Lupin is on a ship where his presence is discovered and he is arrested.  He is sent to the infamous Sante jail from where he somehow manages to escape, commit a burglary and return to prison before anybody else is any the wiser.  The book then tells the story of Lupin from the beginnings of his criminal career when he was just a boy through to him meeting his another of his adversaries- the great detective Sherlock Holmes.

My Review
In many ways Arsene Lupin is the first example of an anti-hero, that is someone who is ultimately bad but has a moral code that means they also try to do good.  Lupin has a sense of chilvalry and is certainly a gentleman.  Lupin also manages to help put other criminals behind bars, particularly someone who is much more

With this book Maurice LeBlanc launched a character that would, in mainland Europe, be as successful as Sherlock Holmes was in the United Kingdom.  Indeed there are many similarities between the characters of Holmes and Lupin.  They could be two side of the same coin.  Each is a brilliant master in his own right.  Just like Holmes, serialisation of the Lupin stories would be the reason for the success.

Another reason could possibly be the easy of writing.  This book is a very easy read, even in an English translation and it is probably meant for audiences of many different ages.
