Plot Summary
Full Dark House is the first novel in the Bryant and May series by author Christopher Fowler.  Arthur Bryant of the Peculiar Crimes Unit is killed when his offices are bombed.  His partner John May is left to investigate the case and soon discovers that Bryant unwittingly disturbed the past when he started to write his memoirs about his work and particularly the first case they worked together: a series of unexplained events taking place in the Palace Theater during the Blitz.  May finds that the two cases are linked.

My Review

The Peculiar Crimes Unit was set up in 1940 but was under threat of being closed down.  Mostly it was there to take cases that other police forces didn't want but also to look at cases that had some unnatural element to them.  The book switches between the present day investigation and the early cases.

The book is probably unusual in crime fiction in that one of the main characters of the series is killed off at the beginning of the series.  Of course that is because this book, as well as the rest of the series, is told in retrospect covering stories during and after World War II.  The peculiar aspect of the case isn't actually that peculiar in this initial book, but more of straightforward police investigation although more out there police investigation techniques are brought in as the story progresses.  In many ways it is a cross between Fringe and Jonathan Creek.

The book was fairly a straightforward, easy enjoyable read and highly recommended.  I will certainly look forward to reading the rest of the series, particularly if the peculiar element is ramped up.
