Plot Summary
Case Histories is the first novel in the Jackson Brodie series by author Kate Atkinson.  Jackson Brodie is a private detective in Cambridge, although he spends most of his time in Northumberland.  He is busy not finding missing cats on behalf of Binky Rain when he becomes involved in a number of cold cases.  A young girl Olivia Land disappeared over thirty five years ago and Jackson is asked to by her sisters to investigate.  Another woman, Sylvia, asks Jackson to find her niece, Tanya, who has disappeared after being taken into care when Tanya's mother killed her father.  Theo Wyre asks Jackson to investigate the murder of his daughter in an attack that was meant for him.

My Review
It is difficult to know how to begin to describe this book.  It is certainly not your typical British crime novel and at times you are not even sure it is going to be a crime novel.  The plot seems to jump around a lot often going back into the past and describing events at tangents and seemingly at random.  It is actually along while before we even meet our detective.  When we do Jackson seems to manage to solve the case in a matter of minutes, despite the police having spent years investigating these cases and failing.

The book is full of sex and sexual innuendo, which at least explains the reasonable TV adaptation of the novel in the series Case Histories, although surprisingly I found I felt it deserved a better adaptation.  The writing is actually quite literary in tone and is where it departs from a usual British crime novel.
