Dexter Morgan is a fictional character created by author Jeff Lindsay.

Dexter was born on the 1st February 1971. He was adopted by police detective Harry Morgan and his wife Doris and gradually learns his real background having only been told that his parents were killed in a car accident.  He was actually born in 1969 to Laura,  She was murdered in 1973 by three drug dealers, an event which Dexter witnessed.  Doris dies when Dexter is sixteen and Harry when Dexter is 20.

Harry discovers that Dexter is a sociopath and has the need to kill when, at the age of seven, Dexter kills a number of animals.  Harry channels Dexter's need 'positively' by teaching him code that means he now only kills other serial killers who have escaped the justice system.
