The Murders In The Rue Morgue is the first in the Monsieur Dupin short stories by American author and poet Edgar Allen Poe.
Two bodies are found in a house in Paris one has been badly beaten and the other has been found shoved up a chimney. They seems to be no obvious explanation for how the murder might have escaped the premises or indeed who the killer might be. The police seem baffled and it is only Monsieur Dupin who has the logically expertise necessary to crack the case. You will be very surprised when Dupin reveals the murdered and it is not something you will be expecting.
The book is a short story so don't expect to be reading it for long. Reader of current crime fiction stories may also find the plot and character details lacking. However, this book deserves 5 stars because it was the first crime book of modern times and it started the genre. Without Edgar Allen Poe crime writing would not be where it is today and no serious or avid crime reader should be without this book in their library.
It was also famous for introducing a sub-genre of crime fiction known as the 'locked-door' mystery in which crimes have been committed without an obvious means of escape, or even entry, for the perpetrator so famously utilized by many an author and more recently by TV series such as Jonathon Creek.
